Not all staffing companies are created equal. If you’re looking for a job, it is important that you choose the right staffing agency for your employment needs. When you meet with a recruiter you’re interviewing them at the same time they’re interviewing you, so don’t be afraid to ask questions about their process, the success rates, or their specializations. Here are some things to keep in mind when talking to these services.
Do they place people in your industry?
Some staffing services are general and some specialize in certain industries. If you work in manufacturing then you probably don’t want to apply with a medical or legal agency. Look at the agencies in your area. Review their websites to see if they place people in jobs like the ones you’re looking for. If you don’t find the info you want, call the office and ask a few questions.
Are they located in or near your area?
Staffing companies are ultimately providing their services to their clients and those businesses are looking for local candidates with reasonable commutes. When applying to staffing agencies, stick to territories that are within your desired driving distance. Being late or not showing up to work is a major issue for recruiters, and they won’t tolerate it in new employees. Avoid the situation all together by sticking to a local agency.
Do you like the people in the office?
Unlike a traditional employer, you won’t be working directly with the staffing agency in the office but you still have to communicate with the recruiters and administrative staff frequently. It is important that you like who you’re working for and that you respect them. If you meet with a recruiter and simply don’t like them, you do not need to work with them. When you walk in the door to the staffing agency for the first time, it doesn’t bind you to making a commitment.
Do they offer benefits?
Not all staffing agencies offer benefits. Find an agency that offers a variety of benefits so that you will not go without benefits until you find or are placed on a permanent job.
What is their submission process?
Before you apply with a staffing agency, talk to them about their process. Find out what you need to become a viable candidate through their service. Find out how they typically work with their clients and if they require any additional testing, background checks, or other evaluations. Find out about following up after a resume has been submitted and what to expect down the road. Each client will be different, but you can get a sense for how the staffing company works this way.
