Here are some things that you can do to prepare yourself for any on-the-job training that you will be faced with as a new hire.
Your first week will probably be based on orientation to the company.
A vast majority of companies set up a couple of days of orientation to get you used to the company and some of the people that you will be working with. This can be limited to a one-day session, in which you will sit in a conference room surrounded by other new hires and a few managers; learning about company history, the culture, and more. You will be filling out paperwork and introducing yourself to your co-workers. You may also get the chance to do some observing of seasoned employees. This gives you a good feel for the company and the work that you will be conducting.
Your next step is usually based on video or eLearning training sessions.
Companies today try to streamline the learning process by putting all new hires through either video training sessions or self-paced eLearning modules. While you may be sitting at your regular workstation or in a classroom, you can expect that this on-the-job training will be intense. Make sure that you get plenty of rest and that you bring your lunch during this time because you will be expected to get it completed in a timely fashion. Be sure to ask questions and understand all material before you take any assessments.
Get ready for some job shadowing and real skills training.
The next leg of your training is often the most exciting part for new employees. You will probably be working alongside your new colleagues doing a great deal of job shadowing, followed by practice sessions. Over time, you will take on more and more tasks on your own while you are supported by your peers and your immediate supervisor. This is a great time to keep a notebook and pen nearby to jot down all questions and notes as you think of them.
At this stage, you may be evaluated by your manager and feedback is very important to listen to. Do your best to listen to all instructions and follow the guidelines set forth by your employer. Do not try to reinvent the wheel. If you run into problems ask for help and guidance.
